105 Books to Read Before You Leave Broadford

At Broadford, we aim to encourage a love of reading. By providing our pupils with quality texts and introducing them to strong characters and identifiable themes, we can broaden their perspectives of the world around them.

This is why we have our 105 Books to Read Before You Leave Broadford. This exciting reading tracker encourages pupils to explore a wide range of literature alongside their regular reading books.

There are 15 books per year group. Each year, pupils can earn their Bronze, Silver and Gold reading certificates along their reading journey.

By the time children leave us in Year 6, they would have made their way through a great list of books, from children’s classics to contemporary new reads.

Books can be read independently or together at home. Many are available in our school library, at your local library, or as audio/ebooks online.

Something a little different for KS2:

Your Reading, Your Way: Read all 15 or 10 from us and 5 from you!

Children in KS2 (yrs 3/4/5/6) can either read all 15 books from the list, or can choose 10 books from the list and 5 books of their own choosing.

Tracking your child’s progress

A tracker poster will shortly be sent home with your child. You can use the tracker to keep your own record at home of what your child has read.

To let us know which books your child has completed, simply write “105 Books” and the title of the book in their Reading Record or email us at: library@broadford-havering.sch.uk School staff will then log their progress and certificates will be awarded for reading 5, 10 and 15 books.

Happy reading!

Examples of how to log progress in your child's Reading Record book:

Lunchtime library club
Last week, the lunchtime Library Club children enjoyed lots of summer-themed activities.

Book of the Week
The Book of the Week last week was The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton. Erin loves to lie on the jetty, looking for the weirdest fish in the sea - the weirder, the better! And she knows the best ones must be further out, where her mum won't let her go... Out there in the deepest sea lies the Black Rock: a huge, dark and spiky mass that is said to destroy any boats that come near it! Can Erin uncover the truth behind this mysterious legend?

Why have a reading competition?

At Broadford Primary School, we believe in developing a culture where children are intrinsically motivated to read for pleasure. We believe in encouraging them to read both inside and beyond school and that the most effective way to promote reading is to work in partnership with parents and families.

Book of the Week
The Book of the Week last week was The Disgusting Sandwich by Gareth Edwards. Is this the most disgusting sandwich ever? It's sandy, goopy, squishy, sluggy and slimy. But one very hungry badger still wants to eat it...or does he?
