Broadford's Book Bench

Check out the photos and videos from the artist's, Jenny Leonard, visit before the half term. Spinebreakers and Book Club members joined Jenny in pairs to help paint the bench - I'm sure you'll agree they did a fantastic job!

 

 

The bench is in the perfect place for a bit of quiet reading! The bench features all of Broadford's favourite characters from authors who we have had the pleasure of meeting over the last three years, as well as characters and logos from popular reading challenges the children have taken part in and places they have visited.

Here we have Yinka reading The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. This story by Jon Scieszka is on the list of 100 books every child should read before they're 14. I am sure you will agree Yinka tells the story very well!

An Afternoon With Malorie Blackman

Yesterday, Kieran, Tyler, Toby, Gariella and Ruby visited Waterstones, Piccadilly - the largest book store in Europe - where they met Children's Laureate Malorie Blackman and writer of teen books, James Dawson.

Malorie began by announcing the top ten books in the 'Writes of Passage', 50 books that will change your life and keep you reading. You can find the full list here… http://www.worldbookday.com/writes-of-passage/ 

 

This was followed by a reading from her book, Noughts and Crosses. 

 

Next was a question and answer session. Toby was chosen from the audience to ask his question, take a look…
 

 

Finally, we all chose a book from Malorie's collection to have signed. We have an area in the library dedicated to Malorie and her books, it's above the Free Reader books, take a look next time you visit!

Super Reader - Sabina Reads 'Little Beauty'

Sabina is our Super Reader this week, reading the story about a very intelligent Gorilla who learnt to use sign language. This helped him to ask for all the things he needed and wanted, including a friend, but, with no other Gorillas at the zoo, they decided to buy him a tiny kitten, called Beauty.

Week Eight - Premier Reading League

 

The teams have returned to school this week eager to earn extra points! Daniel has been on a mission to increase his current team's score by writing reviews over the weekend. Prince has been visiting the library at lunchtime to review some of the books he has been reading at home, while, The Leopard Girls have been borrowing book, after book, after book! There is less than a month to go before the winning teams are announced, so keep up the hard work!

Super Readers - Skaiste Reads Her Lithuanian Story

Skaiste was very excited to share one of her favourite stories from Lithuania this week. Skaiste likes this book because it is full traditional tales and couldn't wait to read it in Lithuanian!

Week Three - The Premier Reading Challenge

No new teams to report this week.
Premier Legends are still in front this week with 103 points! Harry and his team have been commited to attending the library at least once a day to read and write reviews. Please do not be put off by this large number! There are nine weeks still remaining in the first round - plenty of time to catch up!

 

Congratulations to Jaseem who is player of the week, his team, The All Time Champions only joined last week and have already earned 25 points, keep it up!

Our two top teams this week are Premier Legends and All Stars! Premier Legends have worked extremely hard this week, collecting a total of 55 points! If you've only just signed up, don't worry there is plenty of time to catch up with them!

Super Readers - Fawaz Reads The Opening Chapters To 'Doughnut Dilemma'

The Premier Reading League has been a hit this week, with a total of 125 points being collected! Fawaz, a member of The Reading Empire team, offered to share a football book that he thought would be good to read while taking part in the challenge.

Super Readers - Lillie Reads 'About A Bear'

Year one's topic this term is all to with bears. We have been listening to bear stories when we visit the library. So far we have enjoyed hearing about Douglas and his search for a hug, as well as Bernard who is desperate to stay up late!
