Read For My School Starts Today!

The online reading challenge, Read For My School, begins today and will run until March 28th. This year, as a school, we have been given a target to read 500 books. All pupils that read at least 8 books will automatically be entered into a prize draw, and our school will be entered into a separate prize draw to win 100 books, provided we read at least 250 books between us. This year the challenge is open to all pupils from years 3 to 6; online you will find a library of over 100 books and a list of recommended reading material.

Unlike last year, Pearson will donate at 100,000 books to Book Aid International’s life-changing programme, School Library in a Box, distributing new books to schools in Tanzania. A new feature on your personal account allows you to write a letter to the children in Tanzania who will receive the books. Over the course of the competition you can edit the letter as often as you like, once the competition ends one letter will be selected and the pupil who wrote it will be nominated for regional and national awards.
Click on the logo above or on the link to the right to visit the website.

To sign up, click on the link at the bottom of the web page that says, SIGN UP AS A PUPIL. You will then need to fill in the online form, creating a username and password. Try to keep them both simple, like using your full name as the username and Broadford as your password. At the bottom of the page you will need to type in the READING GROUP CODE, this is the same for everyone - 845562. Once you have entered all your information, click on CREATE NEW ACCOUNT, and you're ready to start reading.

As an extra treat, for the first two weeks I will be doubling the points for the Premier Reading League, for each book you read online I will reward you with 2 points and for each review you will receive 6 points for your team! Your name will also go into a library raffle box for every book you read, then once the competition ends two names will be chosen, those two children will win a book each of their choice. Good luck!

Spinebreakers' Trip To The British Library

It was quite an early start for our Spinebreakers yesterday, as we took at trip to The British Library to take part in a workshop led by children's author/illustrator, Nick Sharratt. Despite a short delay on the train to Liverpool Street, we arrived with plenty of time to spare!
Click on the picture above to visit Nick Sharratt's website.

"Nick Sharratt began the workshop by showing us some examples of art he had created when he was a young boy. He knew he wanted to be an illustrator from the age of 9, when his picture of a busy market was displayed in his school for all to see."

"We got to hear some pages from his books, Caveman Dave, Octopus Soctopus, The Foggy Foggy Forest and What's in the Witch's Kitchen? My favourite was What's in the Witch's Kitchen? because there were gruesome things in her fridge!"

"After, Nick showed us his book called Socks, we then had to draw our own sock-pictures. I drew a sockihopter! I liked this part because i got to do my favourite thing - DRAWING!"

"Next, we had to design a new front cover for Roald Dahl's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I made a chocolaty design with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory written on it"

"To finish off, Nick read us, You Choose. As he read the book we had to choose what we wanted from each page to include in our picture. I drew a picture of me wearing a frilly dress, big high heels, a nice purple hat and a pink scarf!"

Before heading home, the Spinebreakers took a look around the Picture This: Children's Illustrated Classics exhibition. The exhibition explores ten children's classics from the 20th century including, Paddington Bear, The Hobbit, The Borrowers and Wind in the Willows. Showing in detail how the illustrators have interpreted the tales in imaginative ways.

Premier Reading League - Player Of The Week - 1

Last week we saw the return of The Premier Reading League, with 14 groups already signed up there were 100's of points to be given out. Each week there will be a spot available for Player of the Week. The title of Player of the Week will be given to the pupil who has earned the most points for that week.
Toby has earned Player of the Week this week for earning a total of 76 points for his team, The Honey Pops. The secret to Toby's success was reading as many books as he could over the Christmas period. Although he didn't receive the 1 point for each book read, he did however, make notes ready to write up when the competition officially started.
Well done Toby, keep up the hard work!
Don't forget to check your account for books you have read in the past that need reviewing.
