Key Stage One Library Books

This week, children in years one and two have been visiting the library in their groups to listen to a story and choose books to take home. For those who are new to borrowing books from the library, once they have read their book at home they can return it to the library in exchange for another. For each book they return, they receive a raffle ticket. The ticket is posted into their class post box, then at the end of each half term a winner is selected from each key stage one class. The more times your child brings their book back, the more chance they have of winning! By returning their books they will also earn points on their class library tracker card, which could help them to win a book for their class at the end of the term.

Don't forget, you can log onto our librarian site at home to view what book your child is currently reading, help them to write reviews and reserve books. To log on, simply follow the link... https://u009108.microlibrarian.net/

The username is your child's full name, all lowercase with no spaces. The password is 'broadford' this is the same for all pupils.

Log On To Junior Librarian At Home!

I am excited to inform you of the launch of a new online version of our junior school library catalogue.  The new system allows students, staff and parents to view our school library catalogue online, and students are encouraged to use this to help with research, to write reviews about books they have read, and search for new books that they may like to read.

The library catalogue, now searchable online, includes books and audio-visual resources as well as many thousands of approved websites.  You can access the system website at: https://u009108.microlibrarian.net/

The first time you access the system it may ask you to install Microsoft Silverlight; please allow this to be downloaded and installed on your computer as the system cannot run without it.

There is also an App called ‘iMLS’, available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android & Windows Phone 7.  This App can be freely downloaded by going to your App provider and searching ‘iMLS’.

Having the library accessible in this way and having parents engaged with reading will help to support our commitment to improving our student’s literacy standards.

Over the coming days, we will begin to create individual log in details for each pupil.  The usernames
will be your child's full name with no breaks, then the password will be Broadford. Parents can use their child's log in details to track what they are reading and help them to choose future books.

The pupils who will be in year six when they return in September have had their details created and can now logon.

The school is strongly committed to promoting reading for pleasure.  Data from the 1970 British Cohort Study provides strong evidence for the link between children who read for pleasure and success in later life.

I hope you find the new facility useful and welcome any feedback.

Summer Term In The Library

Welcome back! Hope you enjoyed the week off.

Like the Spring Term, data has been collected from the Junior Librarian software that the children use to scan their books in and out of the library. Here is what we found out...

During the six weeks, before the holiday, 393 books were borrowed from the library. The most popular author was Jeremy Strong, his book BATPANTS proved very popular and was borrowed seven times!

The books that have been the most popular across each term will have a Broadford Award on the front, like the one below. Take a look next time you visit.

Our top 10 readers, who have borrowed the most books are, Jaseem Miah, Samson Wright, Kieran Dash, Daniel Oluokun, Tommy Overton, Ben Green, Emma Groom, George White, Evan Andrews and Kie Allen!

Competitions and Challenges

The Night Zoo Keeper Reading Torch will continue, so far nine pupils have completed the challenge. You can find out more here or pick up a reading torch from the library.

The Broadford Big Read is still available for Key Stage 2 to take part in, and has now been adapted for Key Stage 1! I had a few requests from pupils in Cedar to create a Broadford Big Read for them too. Instead of six challenges, there are four. Like the KS2 one, they have to complete all the challenges to earn a Bronze Certificate, complete the challenges again for a Silver Certificate and once more to earn a Gold Certificate. Pupils will be informed of the reading challenge when they visit in their groups.

The Returning Books Raffle starts again today. Each pupil that returns their library book has their name posted in their class post box, then at the end of the term a winner is selected from each class. Before the holiday there was a total of 151 book returns!

Spring Term In The Library

We have been very busy in the library this half of the Spring term. Key stage 1 have continued to visit the library each week in their groups and shared some lovely stories, including some fantastic tales by Julia Donaldson. I have received some beautiful pictures and reviews of the books they have borrowed.

I have started to put together a library scrapbook, which allows pupils to read reviews of popular books and is a place to document all the challenges, competitions and book-related clubs we take part in. The scrapbook will be on display for all to see after the half term, but here's a sneak peek...

Since November KS1 and 2 have been making good use of the library software that we now have up and running, it allows them to see what books are available in our library and also lets them scan books in and out, something they seem to love! The bonus of using the library software is that we can see what books are popular, what books individual children like to read, who has borrowed the most books and so on. We would like to share some of this information with you...

- Over the last month KS1 and 2 have borrowed 589 books!

- The most popular author was Francesca Simon, writer of the Horrid Henry stories.

- In our KS1 groups the most requested book to read was 'Peppa Pig, The Tooth Fairy'.

- Our top 10 readers, who have borrowed the most books are, Ben Green, George White, Samson Wright, Albie Brown, Teddy Pilcher, Charly Wallace, David Sangojinmi, Uthman Falade, Tumelo Sibanda and Chloe Trew!

Year 3 to year 6 have been encouraged to join reading challenges like The Broadford Big Read and Read For My School. So far more than 40 pupils in KS2 are taking part in a challenge or book club! Pupils from years 5 and 6 have been working extra hard over the last two weeks to earn achievemnets in the Read For My School challenge. 25 children have signed up and 85 books have be read! There is still time to join in, just visit www.readformyschool.co.uk enter the school ID - 77215, use your name as the username and enter your year group, then all that's left to do is read! Well done for all your hard work, there will be more challenges, competitions and clubs starting after the holiday.

A HUGE thank you to our Super Readers Sienna, Lebohang, Bryan, Ellie and tomorrows Holly, who have done a fantastic job in sharing some of our library classics with you on the Broadford Youtube channel. I have plenty more videos ready and waiting to be uploaded so please continue to look out for them every Friday.

Don't forget there is still time to enter the 'Design a Bookmark Competition', take a look at http://broadfordlibrary.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/design-bookmark-competition-2013.html
