If you complete the challenge, let us know via our Instagram or Library email:

Instagram: @broadfordlibrary  Email: library@broadford-havering.sch.uk

School Summer Reading Challenge

By now, you should have received our Broadford school library Summer Reading Challenge, which also includes information about this year's Get Caught Reading challenge. Take a look below:

Our challenges are always bursting with ideas and fun ways of keeping you reading during your break away from school.

Make sure you hand your completed challenge into the school library when you return to school by Friday 5th September 2025 for a special certificate!

Get Caught Reading!

Like previous years, we would love to see you reading during the summer break, whether it be at home or far away. Take part by sending one photo (with your full name and new class) of yourself caught reading somewhere exciting over the summer to:

Instagram: @broadfordlibrary  Email: library@broadford-havering.sch.uk

You can view your photo on our Library Instagram Page, so please head over there to give us a follow.

We will choose one winner and one runner-up from each Key Stage. These lucky ones will be rewarded with a prize. All entries need to be in by Wednesday 3rd September. Winners will be announced the following week.

Why have a reading competition?

At Broadford Primary School, we believe in developing a culture where children are intrinsically motivated to read for pleasure. We believe in encouraging them to read both inside and beyond school and that the most effective way to promote reading is to work in partnership with parents and families.

Reading Assembly - Non-Fiction Books Added To The Trackers!

Miss Myers lead the KS1 assembly this week. From the Reception Tracker, Miss Myers read Julia Donaldson's every so popular, Room on the Broom! This kind and caring witch makes plenty of room on her broom for the animals she passes.

You may have noticed that we have made a few changes to our reading trackers this year. We have added a copy of non-fiction texts to each one - non-fiction texts that link to the topics covered in classes. Miss Greenwood shared facts from 'Project Ancient Egypt'. Copies of this book can be found in our school library.

Reading Achievements

Well done to Nyasa, who completed Broadford's Summer Reading Tracker. If you have a completed tracker at home, return it to the school library where you'll receive a certificate of achievement.

Maggie is off to a flying start! She has read five books from her '105 Books' tracker, earning herself a Bronze Certificate!

Earn your Blue Peter Reading Badge! See how you can take part here.

Summer Reading Challenge 2021 - Wild World Heroes

This week we heard from Viv, the librarian from Havering Libraries. She told us all about the upcoming Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge will begin on 10th July and will run until 4th September. This year's theme is 'Wild World Heroes', and encourages us to look after our planet and the animals that we share it with.

To take part, simply pop down to your local library from the 10th July and pick up a starter pack. The pack contains a bookmark, pencil, a folder to log your reading and stickers for your adult at home to reward you with as you read.

You only need to read six books across the eight weeks. You will need to complete a book review for each book you read. There are plenty of games and challenges to be found on the official summer challenge website. Once you have completed your challenge, hand it in at your local library. When we return to school in September all pupils who have completed the challenge will be rewarded with a certificate and medal in assembly.

Next week you'll receive a special challenge invitation with more information.

Summer Reading Challenges

There are plenty of ways to keep reading this summer - yesterday, you would have received a selection of leaflets and summer challenge sheets to keep you motivated during the holidays.

Like previous years, we have updated our summer reading tracker that includes a variety of reading activities to complete. If you return your completed tracker in September you will be rewarded with a special certificate and medal!
Why not take part in our annual Get Caught Reading Challenge? Last year we travelled over 35,000 miles, making sure we were snapped reading on our journeys. Send your photos to our Facebook page for your photo to be added to our Google Map and to feature on the school blog.

Look out for our Facebook questions of the week - these will go live every Friday. One winner who correctly answers the question will be selected at random and announced on the following Monday. Please make sure you include your child's name in the post so we know who to pass the prize on to. If you are answering on behalf of two or more children, please state all their names so we can allocate them a number for the draw.

Last, but definitely not least, there is the national reading challenge to take part in at your local library! The challenge is a space-themed adventure that encourages you to read at least six fiction or non-fiction books - that's just one a week! Along your reading journey, you'll receive a collector's folder, stickers, a bookmark, snakes and ladders game, a window sticker and kit bag!

Enjoy the summer break!
