Don't forget to share your 'Get Caught Reading' photos! Children may be caught reading on holiday somewhere, snuggled up at home, in the local library, up a tree in the garden - the more creative, the better! Photos can then be sent in via our Facebook or Instagram pages.

We will then choose one winner and one runner-up from each Key Stage - these lucky ones will be rewarded with a prize. All entries need to be in by Friday 6th September. Winners will be announced during the following week's assembly.

We cannot wait to see where you will be caught reading this summer!

There is still time to sign up and complete the challenge! Head down to your local library or sign up online by visiting their website.

Last year, 26 pupils from Broadford completed the Summer challenge - an average of just 1 child per class. This year, we aim to increase that number! 

If you complete the challenge, let us know via our Facebook or Instagram accounts. 

Children who complete the challenge will be entered into a draw and will have the chance of winning a prize!

How does it work? 

During the summer holidays, parents/carers and other family members look out for chances to ‘catch their child reading’. This can be a book or any other reading material, such as timetables, recipes or instructions. Children may be caught reading on holiday somewhere, snuggled up at home, in the local library, up a tree in the garden - the more creative, the better! The photos can then be shared via our social media platforms to celebrate the reading being done and to promote the competition to other families.

Like previous years, we would love to see you reading during the summer break, whether it be at home or far away. Photos can be sent in via our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Over the years, we have received hundreds of entries; from children reading aloud to animals to reading while up mountains! We have been so lucky to see you continuing your love of reading during the summer breaks.

Summer Reading Challenges Return!

Hopefully, you have had the chance to sign up to the National Summer Reading Challenge at your local library. This year's theme is Marvellous Makers!

By now, you should have received our Broadford school library Summer Reading Challenge Tracker, which also includes information about this year's Get Caught Reading challenge. Take a look at the trackers below:

Our trackers are bursting with ideas and ways of keeping you reading during your summer break away from school. There are extra tasks like creating a poster, advertising your favourite book, writing a new blurb for the last book you read, and creating a monster character - just to name a few! The challenge sheet also features a bucket list - how many will you tick off?

Make sure you hand your completed trackers into the school library when you return to school by Friday 6th September 2024 for a special certificate!

Facebook Summer Questions

We will share a reading-themed question with you every Friday during the holidays over on our Facebook page. Simply leave your answers in the comments section and one person (with the correct answer) will be chosen at random to win a prize! The lucky winners will be announced on Mondays throughout the summer holidays. Prizes will be sent home on Friday 13th September 2024.

We think that's enough to keep you busy this summer! Make sure you enjoy the outdoors and make lots of memories with your families and friends!  

Why have a reading competition?

At Broadford Primary School, we believe in developing a culture where children are intrinsically motivated to read for pleasure. We believe in encouraging them to read both inside and beyond school. We believe that the most effective way to promote reading is to work in partnership with parents and families. 

Returning Books Year Group Competition

The imminent end of the school year is always the time when requests are made for children and staff to return any borrowed library books. 

This year, we decided to create an exciting new challenge around the school! Each class has had the chance to compete within their own year group to see who could return the most library books back to the library before a certain deadline. 

This has proven to be a very popular competition for pupils and staff! As a result, we have had a large number of books returned, enabling us to restock lots of sections in the library in preparation for the new school year in September. 

Congratulations to the following classes who returned the most books within their year group: 

Year 1: Walnut

Year 2: Pine

Year 3: Cedar

Year 4: Elm

Year 5: Almond

An additional huge congratulations to Cedar class for returning the most books in the school - 107 books in total!

105 Books Reading Achievements

It has been a bumper week for certificates!

Well done to Rosie, Matthew, Oscar, Ryan and Jack who have read five books, earning their Bronze Certificates.

Well done to Rebecca, Harley, Jackson, Aryaan, Carter, Scarlet, Dani, Nashwan and Bruno who have read all 15 books, earning their Gold Certificates and completing their trackers.

Welcome to the Broadford Library Weekly Newsletter! 

Each week, we will be bringing you a look back on the previous week in the library, including the fun that our lunchtime library clubs have had, new books, children's book reviews, library displays and much more!

Lunchtime library clubs

Last week, our two Library lunchtime clubs enjoyed their last session with a delicious treat. They had lots of fun completing a Summer Activity Booklet and enjoyed colouring their own personalised bookmark. Thank you for coming to our Lunchtime Library Club, we look forward to continuing with the clubs in September. Farewell to our Year 6 children who attended our Library Clubs. You will be missed!

Library displays

It is that exciting time of the year again where we get ready for all the fun Summer Reading activities. Every child will shortly receive a Summer Reading Tracker that they can complete and return to school by Friday September 6th 2024. 

Everyone will also receive a bookmark from our local library. This year's National Summer Reading Challenge theme is Marvellous Makers! Head down to your local library or sign up online by visiting their website. 

New in the library

This year, we have set up an exciting new challenge for all Year Groups. Each class will be competing with their year group to see who can return the most library books back to the library before: Wednesday 17th July 2024. 

Can you help your child's class to win! 

Borrowed library books brought back from home = 1 point 

Any books with our 'Library Return' tags on them = 2 points 

Any books from our 105 books to read = 3 points

Book reviews

Our lovely Year 1 Chatterbooks group have been coming to the Library every Wednesday to listen to different Julia Donaldson stories and complete activities. This term they have been working on Zog. They enjoyed completing a book review in their last session and gave the book 5 stars. 

Visitors to the library

Last week, some of our Year 4 children enjoyed individual visits to the library for extra reading time.

 

Spinebreakers

Last week, Prisha, Ronnie and Matei from Nursery returned the Story Scrapbook to the library. The nursery children produced some lovely artwork on their chosen theme of Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz for their display. 

Nursery were the final recipients of the scrapbook for this school year. Well done to everyone for such wonderful displays and creativity for your chosen books!

 

105 Books reading achievements

Well done to Olivia who has read five books and earned her Bronze Certificate.

 Well done to Alayah, Emmy and Darcie who have read 10 books and earned their Silver Certificates.

Well done to Maggie, Ava, Aiza and Anya who have read all 15 books, earning their Gold Certificates and completing their trackers.

Urgent request - Returning borrowed library books

We have had lots of lovely new books added to the library collection over the past couple of months but, unfortunately, many of them have been borrowed by children and never returned to the library. Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.
