Returning Books Raffle - Reception and Year 1

This year we are introducing a 'Returning Books Raffle' for pupils in Reception and Year 1. Each time they return their library book (not the book supplied by their class teacher) they will be entered into our half-termly raffle. At the end of the half term, three names will be pulled from the box. Those winning pupils will receive a book from our special book box!

This week, Year 1 will begin visiting the library to share stories and borrow books to bring home.

Gadgeteers Reading Challenge

Throughout the summer break, we shared pictures of our pupils completing this year's Summer Reading Challenge 'Gadgeteers'. If you haven't completed yours yet, there is still time! You have until Saturday 17th September 2022. Head down to your local library as soon as you have finished - there you will be rewarded with a certificate and medal!

Take a look at our super summer readers! If you have a photo with your certificate and medal that you'd like to share, send it over via our Facebook and Instagram pages.

'Our Favourite Stories' Scrapbook

This year, we will be introducing a reading scrapbook. The scrapbook will be travelling around the school, visiting each class at some point. The Spinebreakers will be responsible for the delivering and collecting the book every Thursday. Each class will be given one week to fill a double page with artwork, writing and their thoughts on the book they are listening to as part of their end of day read.

The Year 1 Spinebreakers took the lead and filled the first double spread this week! After hearing the story of Supertato and his friends, the Super Veggies, they were keen to draw pictures of the characters and write sentences about the book.

Next week, the scrapbook will be delivered to it's first class! We can't wait to see where it ends up and what creativity it will be filled with!

Welcome Back! - Our New Reading Assemblies Have Begun!

This year we are introducing a weekly assembly to celebrate all things reading! Each week, we will dedicate our assembly to a book that features on the '105 Books to Read Before you Leave Broadford' book list. This will also be the perfect opportunity to celebrate and award pupils for their reading achievements.

Reading assemblies will take place on Tuesdays (one per key stage). Look out for our weekly blog post which will featured the shared stories of the day.

This Week's Reading Assembly

We are kicking off our reading assembly this week with a recap of our '105 Books' challenge. Each year group has been provided with a specific tracker, these trackers contain 15 titles - stories which include inspirational characters; marvelous adventures; and fascinating topics that we hope will promote discussion and enjoyment. Please note, Harold Hill Library have kindly put together a selection of the books that feature on our '105 Books' list, these books are readily available for you to borrow.

Mrs Ward lead the KS2 assembly this morning. The story she chose to share was Roald Dahl's Matilda - a classic loved by many! Matilda features on the Year 4 Reading Tracker.

Mrs Nicholls lead the KS1 assembly this afternoon. Her choice of book to share with the children was Each Peach Pear Plum - a story she knows off by heart! Each Peach Pear Plum features on the Reception Reading Tracker.

Today's assembly included a reminder for pupils about the importance of reading and our school vision and expectations - we expect children at Broadford to read at home for twenty minutes per day.

Summer Reading Challenges 2021!

Hopefully you have had the chance to sign up to the national reading challenge at your local libraries. This year's theme is 'Wild World Heroes', it aims to encourage us to look after our planet and the animals we share it with.

By now you should have received a school summer challenge/tracker and a leaflet about this year's Get Caught Reading Challenge. Here's a little extra information for you all...

Summer Challenge Trackers

Our trackers are bursting with ideas and ways of keeping you reading during our break away from school. There are extra tasks like, redesigning a front cover for your favourite book, creating a quiz based on a story you have read, and researching an author - just to name a few! The challenge sheet also features a bucket list - how many will you tick off?

Make sure you hand your completed trackers in when you return to school in September for a special certificate!

Get Caught Reading!

Like previous years we would love to see you reading during the summer break, whether it be at home or far away. Pictures can be sent in via our Facebook and Instagram pages. A library Instagram page has been set up for you to view all photos so please head over there to give us a follow.

@broadfordlibrary

We will choose one winner from each key stage and one runner-up. These lucky few will be rewarded with National Book Tokens. All entries need to be in by Friday 10th September. Winners will be announced on Friday 17th September 2021.

Facebook Questions

We will share a reading-themed question with you every Friday during the holidays over on our Facebook page. Simply leave your answers in the comments section and one person (with the correct answer) will be chosen at random to win a goodie bag of book treats! The lucky winners will be announced on Mondays. Prizes will be sent home during the first week back in September.

We think that will keep you busy this summer! Make sure you enjoy the outdoors and make lots of memories with your families and friends!

Summer Reading Challenge 2021 - Wild World Heroes

This week we heard from Viv, the librarian from Havering Libraries. She told us all about the upcoming Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge will begin on 10th July and will run until 4th September. This year's theme is 'Wild World Heroes', and encourages us to look after our planet and the animals that we share it with.

To take part, simply pop down to your local library from the 10th July and pick up a starter pack. The pack contains a bookmark, pencil, a folder to log your reading and stickers for your adult at home to reward you with as you read.

You only need to read six books across the eight weeks. You will need to complete a book review for each book you read. There are plenty of games and challenges to be found on the official summer challenge website. Once you have completed your challenge, hand it in at your local library. When we return to school in September all pupils who have completed the challenge will be rewarded with a certificate and medal in assembly.

Next week you'll receive a special challenge invitation with more information.
