Book reviews
Our Spinebreakers completed some great book reviews during their trip to the library last week.

Visitors to the library
Last week, our new Chatterbooks library sessions for all year groups started. The first groups in each class chosen had great fun listening to a story and then discussing/answering questions about it. There are now lots of excited children waiting for their turn!

Spinebreakers
Last week, our Year 5 Spinebreakers had a lovely visit to Harold Hill library. They read stories, completed book reviews, learned how the library works and had a try of using the library machine to borrow books. Everyone had a great time despite the rain!

Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.

The Story Suitcases have returned!

We were so excited to see the Story Suitcases presented to Batool and Stanley during our weekly Reading Assemblies. Both pupils kept their Story Suitcase for 3 nights - giving them time to spend a cosy evening to snuggle with the bear and share the story over a cup of hot chocolate.

Included in the suitcases are scrapbooks for the children to record what they loved about the story.

Batool loved the story inside the suitcase and said it inspires her to become an artist.

Stanley happily shared his story with his mum. He learnt some facts about Vikings and enjoyed the hot chocolate.

We look forward to presenting them to more children next week.

Year 5 Spinebreakers visit Harold Hill Library

Yesterday, our Year 5 Spinebreakers braved the rain to enjoy a lovely trip to Harold Hill Library with Miss Flower and Mrs Jobber.

First, they browsed the shelves before each choosing a book to read.

Once they had read their books, they each completed a book review.

The Spinebreakers then listened to some stories, before learning about how the library works and the process of borrowing books. To practice, they each had a turn of using the library machine to check out a book.

Those children who do not already have one were given an application form for a Library Card.

Everyone had a lovely time and it was great to tick the first two tasks off of their Spinebreaker trackers for this year!

Reading Assemblies - Children from around the world and a young orphan's story!

This week, in KS1, Miss Hamilton picked out some interesting facts from Moira Butterfield's book, Welcome to Our World. This magnificent book celebrates children from around the world - their cultures and languages.

This book features on the Reception 105 book list, which you can see here

In KS2 this week, Miss Betty read some extracts from a children's classic - Heidi. Written over a century ago, Heidi is set in the Swiss Alps and follows the story of a young orphan who is sent to the Swiss mountains to live with her grandfather.

This book features on the Year 5 105 book list, which you can see here

Copies of these books can be found in our school library to borrow.

Please email Miss Flower and Mrs Jobber if you are looking for one of the '105 Books to Read', with your child's full name and class.

Lunchtime library clubs
Last week, we welcomed back our two Library lunchtime clubs. The children enjoyed listening to The Chatterbox Bear, a comical story all about differences and individuality. They then had great fun designing their own All About Me activity sheet.

Book Fair
Thank you so much to everyone who purchased books at last week's Book Fair. Together, your purchases enabled us to buy 20 lovely new books for our school library.

Library displays
Last week, we continued to shine our Author Spotlight on Roald Dahl, whose books are some of the most popular and frequently borrowed in the library.

New in the library
We were very lucky to recently receive a lovely donation of lots of Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, which are always very popular in the library.

Book reviews
Eddie in Year 6 recommended The Unlikely Rise of Harry Sponge by Stephen Mangan. He thought it was hilarious and gave it 5 stars!

Visitors to the library
The children have been very excited to see Theo back at school. They love sharing stories with Theo and enjoy giving him a gentle stroke.

Spinebreakers
Last week, we excitedly introduced our new Spinebreakers for 2024/25. We are now busy planning library and Waterstones trips, as well as lots of ways the Spinebreakers will be getting involved at school this year.

105 Books to Read Before You Leave Broadford Primary

At Broadford, we aim to encourage a love of reading. By providing our pupils with quality texts and introducing them to strong characters and identifiable themes, we can broaden their perspectives of the world around them. This is why we have our 105 Books to Read Before You Leave Broadford. This system is in addition to the regular reading books that are sent home weekly.

There are 15 books per year group. Each year, pupils can earn their Bronze, Silver and Gold reading certificates along their reading journey. By the time they leave us in Year 6, they would have made their way through a great list of books, from children’s classics to contemporary new reads.

It may be that you sit and read these books with your child, or they read them independently. We have many of these books in the school library for the children to borrow. You could also visit your local library to borrow titles from the list, or search for audio/ebook versions online.

*Tracking your child’s reading journey*
A tracker poster was sent home with each child before the Summer holidays. You can use the tracker to keep your own record at home of what your child has read. Once they read one of the 15 books, please clearly make a note of it in their white Reading Record book - see examples of how:

Your child’s progress can then be logged at school and certificates will be given for reading five, 10 and all 15 books from the list.

Here are all of the year group books:
