Year 1 Spinebreakers - Peter Rabbit Book Club

The Spinebreakers have been very busy the last few weeks learning all about Beatrix Potter's famous characters. Today, the children tested one another on their knowledge of the stories. Check out our Youtube clip to see what they asked one another...

At the end of today's session they began hearing about Mr Tod and Tommy Brock, they will continue the story when we return after the break.

Year 2 Spinebreakers - Book Reviews Of The Fortnight!

Victoria, Kyriq and Amelia are the latest Spinebreakers to have visited Harold Hill Library. They were set with the task of choosing some books to read back at school that we haven't heard before.
Take a look at their choices here...

On returning to school, the Spinebreakers got to work - sharing their stories and writing book reviews. They chose to review Richard Byrne's book, The Case of the Red-Bottomed Robber. This book is quite a new release. It tells the story of a group of crayon classmates who keep having their drawings rubbed out. With the help of Sergeant Blue, their discover who the culprit is.

Both Srinika's and Amelia's reviews have been displayed on our 'We Are Reading' wall. The display changes fortnightly to show the books the Spinebreakers have borrowed - so keep an eye out next time you visit!

Harry Potter Quiz 1 - Gryffindor Round

The pupils participating in this year's Harry Potter Course visited Mead yesterday to work with their team mates to compete in the first of six quizzes. They were tested on their ability to identify and correctly name the characters; complete character puzzles in a set time; match vocabulary to the correct meaning; answer multiple choice questions; and organise images from the film into the order in which they appeared. The pupils were rewarded points for each round - these points were then collected in once all challenges had been completed.

Year 1 Spinebreakers - Peter Rabbit Book Club

Our Year 1 Spinebreakers have continued reading the stories created by Beatrix Potter. This week they shared 'The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies'. They heard how Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail bravely entered Mr McGregor's garden to help themselves to some overgrown lettuces. Luckily, the bunnies were able to escape a large sack that Mr McGregor had stuffed them into!

The children then wrote about the bunnies - Ellie-Mae described them as being brown bunnies who enjoy picking, and eating, blackberries. Kyla wrote about their brother, Peter, who was a little bit naughty at times by not listening to his mother's instructions!

Next week, they will begin reading 'The Tale of Mr Tod'.

Click on Peter Rabbit below and take a look at Beatrix Potter's website. Here you will find lots of games, stories, author information and printable activities...

Year 6 Spinebreakers Visit Waterstones!

Our year 6 Spinebreakers were the first to visit Waterstones to purchase a selection of new books for the school library.

Aimee picked up a copy of David Walliams', Mrs Stink, along with Emma Carroll's, 'The Girl Who Walked on Air'.

'The Boy at the Back of the Class' appealed to Joshua - he is keen to find out more about this character. His second choice was 'The House with Chicken Legs' - this one Joshua is currently reading, so we look forward to hearing more about it!

Ananya chose three stories-in-one in a copy of Malory Towers by Enid Blyton. She was also eager to pick up Alisha Dixon's second book in her series of the Lightning Girl.

Nikola went for, 'There's a Yeti in the Playground', and 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians'.

Ashlee, our newly appointed Spinebreaker, picked Jacqueline Wilson's latest books, My Mum Tracy Beaker - Ashlee has a copy of this book at home and assures me it's a good read! Her second book was C. S. Lewis', The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Spinebreakers have taken home one of each of their books to read over the next week or so, once they have finished they will return them for all to borrow.

Year 1 Spinebreakers - Peter Rabbit Book Club!

This term our Year 1 Spinebreakers are taking on the role of being Peter Rabbit Book Club members! They will visit the library every Friday to share stories by Beatrix Potter and complete Peter Rabbit-themed puzzles, activities and book reviews. During the month of December they will be joined by the Spinebreakers at Mead where they will watch a special viewing of the recently released film!

Last week, the Spinebreakers met for the first time. They thoroughly enjoyed The Tale of Peter Rabbit and successfully identified the main characters in the story!

Year 2 Spinebreakers - Book Reviews Of The Fortnight!

Our Year 2 Spinebreakers are responsible for making links with the local library - Harold Hill. Once a fortnight they visit the library to select books to share back at school. Once the stories have been read, they pick their favourite and write a short review - highlighting who the main characters are, where the story is set and their favourite parts.

Abdulmalik, Victoria and Srinika were the first to visit the library, and chose the following following books:

This week the Spinebreakers reviewed 'Worst In Show', the tale of a little boy who enters his monster into a monster-competition. It turns out that a non-warty, parasite-free monster isn't very monster-like at all!

Both Lucas and Kyriq's reviews have been displayed on our 'We Are Reading' wall. The display changes fortnightly to show the books the Spinebreakers have borrowed - so keep an eye out next time you visit!

Amelia, Kyriq and Victoria will be off to Hilldene tomorrow to see what else Harold Hill Library has to offer!
