New Books Chosen By The Spinebreakers

Take a look at the books our Spinbreakers chose on their recent visit to Waterstones...

Kingsley added to two of the series we have to offer by selecting Frankie's Magic Football: Frankie Vs The Knight's Nastie and Beast Quests' The Dagger of Doom.

Lilly went for some books that I'm sure the girls in KS2 will love. She chose Cathy Cassidy's Cherry Crush and Rose and the Silver Ghost.

Unfortunately Yinka was taking part in a sport's afternoon so was unable to join us on the visit, but we picked out the two books he wanted (and brought him back a cake!) Yinka's choices were David Walliams' Ratburger and, being a big football fan, he also chose Tom Palmers' Boys United.

Dara has read her way through all of the Dork Diaries books we have on offer so was eager to pick up the latest story - Holiday Heartbreak, as well as another story by Cathy Cassidy - Marshmallow Skye.

Like Kingsley, Success wanted to hear more about Frankies' Magic Football and chose Frankie and the World Cup Carnival (I'm sure this is going to be very popular!) He also picked out Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney.

Sharna added to the Jeff Kinney collection also by choosing The Third Wheel and then went for, A Soldier's Friend.

Jaseem has really enjoyed our Beast Quest challenge so went for two books that he is sure KS2 will enjoy. He picked out Ferrok and Vedra and Krimon Twin Beasts of Avantia

Keeley wanted two from a series she hadn't yet heard of called My Sister the Vampire. Her choices were Stake out and Twin Spins.

Being a huge Minecraft fan, Charly grabbed two of the handbooks they had on offer.

Emily followed in Keeley's footsteps and picked out another book from the series, My Sister the Vampire, titled Switched. Her second choice was The Silky Seal Pup.

Lebohang already had in mind that he was after a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book so he went for Cabin Fever, then he picked out The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon.

Lastly, Suada added to our Rainbow Magic books buy selecting Carly The School Friend Fairy and My Little Pony - Twilight Sparkle and Crystal Heart Spell.

All of the books they picked will be available to borrow after the holiday, you will find them in the Spinebreaker section of the library.

The Spinebreakers Visit Waterstones!

Yesterday our Spinebreakers took a trip to Waterstones to choose some new books for the school library. Each child had the opportunity to pick out two new books that would make interesting reads for themselves and their classmates. Some had the books in mind that they were after, but with hundreds on offer it was a hard decision choosing!

After exploring Waterstones' children area we made our way upstairs to Costa where everyone was treated to cake.

Altogether we purchased 24 new books which will be on display once we return after the school break. Over the week the Spinebreakers will be reading the books they chose and will be reviewing them as soon as they return! Check out tomorrow's blog post to find out a little more about the books they selected.

Matilda Book Club - Week 1

Our new Matilda book club began yesterday after school. The twelve year three members were very excited to be taking part! Their first session involved describing the main characters in the story. In small groups they came up with as many words as they could to describe the main characters in the story. Here is what they thought of Miss Honey and The Trunchbull...

The Trunchbull was described as being...
evil, spiteful, selfish, greedy, grumpy, cruel, strong, loud, sweaty, ugly and horrid (just to name a few!)
The group were a little kinder to Miss Honey, describing her as...
helpful, kind, friendly, thoughtful, sweet, polite, beautiful, delightful, caring, clever and cheerful.

Beast Quest and Rainbow Magic - Reading Groups Started, Free Books and Prizes Up For Grabs!

Before the holiday, pupils in Key Stage two signed up to take part in the new reading adventures provided by the National Literacy Trust. The children were asked to organise themselves into groups of no more than eight pupils. The aim of the challenge is to read the complete series of either Beast Quest series one or Rainbow Magic's first series.

We were extremely pleased to receive 30 sets of Beast Quest and Rainbow Magic books from The National Literacy Trust. This kind donation has helped to open the reading challenge to more groups of pupils across key stage one and two. The groups ahve now received their reading packs which contain the first book from their chosen series, along with a reading log/map for everyone and membership cards. Each group can take their reading packs out at lunch to share the stories with their friends.

The challenge will end on 27 June 2014. Each child who reads their way to the end of their epic journey will receive a certificate and be entered into a national prize draw. Two winners (chosen at random) will receive:
- An eReader
- Book vouchers
- Rainbow Magic or Beast Quest merchandise
- A visit to their school from a Rainbow Fairy from the Rainbow Magic series or Wizard Aduro and Nanook from the Beast Quest series

As we received such a large amount of books and posters we will be giving some away! For each child who completes the challenge their name will go into a raffle, the raffle winners will be announced on the last day of the competition. There is still plenty of time to take part so sign up today!

Premier Reading League - Players Of The Week - 2 (Trip Announced!)

Congratulations to both Jack and Harry who have earned 29 points each for their teams, Team of the Year and The Shield. At the top of the league table this week we have Premier Gunners, in second place we have Team of the Year followed closely by The Shield and Goal Scorers!

When the challenge began we asked each child who signed up to vote for the stadium they would like to visit if their team win the reading league. On Friday we collected the votes in and the stadium with the most votes was The Emirates. The two top teams at the end of the 8 week challenge will visit the ground, along with the two remaining pupils who have earned the most points.
