Broadford Library Weekly Newsletter - 04/05/26

Welcome to the Broadford Library Weekly Newsletter!
Each week, I will be bringing you a look back on the previous week in the library, including the fun that our lunchtime library clubs have had, new books, children's book reviews, library displays and much more!

Lunchtime library club
Last week, our lunchtime Library Club children enjoyed some pirate-themed activities.

Book of the Week
The Book of the Week last week was The Ghost of Grania O'Malley by Michael Morpurgo. Everyone knows the Big Hill is full of gold, and now the islanders are intent on cutting the top off it and making themselves rich. Jessie and Jack are determined to save the Big Hill but what can they do? A plan is needed, and fast. Could the ghost of Grania O'Malley, the pirate queen, be the answer?

Chatterbooks sessions
Last week, library Chatterbooks groups continued enjoying Supertato! Everyone had great fun colouring in superhero vegetables!

Lost books - can you help?
All of the library copies of The Secret World of Polly Flint by Helen Cresswell are missing and Miss Flower has children waiting to read a copy to complete their 15 Books to Read in Year 3 trackers.
Please can you check to see if your child has borrowed a copy - if you find one, please return it to the school library asap. Thank you.

Plants for Pollinators project
For 2026, Havering Council has launched an ambitious year-long Plants for Pollinators project across all Havering public libraries, highlighting the vital role of pollinators (like butterflies, bees and beetles) and empowering residents to take action to support them.

All primary schools in the borough have been gifted copies of two lovely books focusing on pollination and rewilding - last week, we have received our copies and they are now available for children to borrow from our school library.

Throughout 2026, Havering Libraries will offer a wide range of activities, events, and learning opportunities designed to raise awareness of pollinators and inspire sustainable gardening practices. If you would like to learn more and find out how you and your children can get involved, please visit Harold Hill Library or your nearest local public library.

Urgent request - Returning borrowed library books
We have so many lovely books in our library but, unfortunately, many of them get borrowed by a child and then never returned to the library. Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.
