Broadford's Big Book Giveaway - another great success!

 

Yesterday, we held our second Broadford's Big Book Giveaway and it was another great success! 

This event was an opportunity to come along after school in the new hall to choose some books for free to enjoy at home over the summer holidays. 

The extremely generous donations by our Broadford community meant that there was a vast range of books available for everyone to choose from. 

From popular chapter books, like Roald Dahl and Horrid Henry, fun graphic novels like Dogman, seasonal classics like The Night Before Christmas, to wonderful picture and board books for our younger readers, there really was something for everyone!

Everyone enjoyed browsing the books to find their favourites, or perhaps to discover a new book or author they had not read before.

There were lots of great choices made and very happy children!

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to support the event, despite the very hot weather!

Please continue to make any donations of children's books - you can give them to your child's class teacher or to the school library when we return to school in September. Thank you.

School reading books to be returned by Wednesday 15th July 2026

 

With only a week left of school until we break up for the summer holidays, please can you ensure that any school library books, Read, Write, Inc books and ‘colour-banded’ reading books that your child has at home are returned back to school by Wednesday 15th July 2026 at the latest.

Books can be either returned to the school library or your child's class.

Following the great success of our first Broadford's Big Book Giveaway in March, we are excited to announce that we will be holding a second one after school in the new hall

Reading Assemblies - Wolves and The Indian in the Cupboard

 

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Ashworth read Wolves! What if a book could come alive? Rabbits and readers beware…

For the KS2 Reading Assembly this week, Mrs Whiten read an extract from The Indian in the Cupboard. This story follows a young boy named Omri who receives a magical cupboard that can bring plastic toys to life, including a miniature Native American figure.

Well done to Tazkiya and Chloe who have received their Bronze Certificates for reading 5 books from their trackers.

Well done to Surabhi and Teodor who have received their Silver Certificates for reading 10 books.

Huge congratulations to Alder class in Reception for being the second class this year where all children have completed their '15 Books to Read' for their year group and earned their Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates!

In celebration of the class's amazing achievement, Miss Flower presented them with a wonderful collection of animal stories for the whole class to enjoy.

National Summer Reading Challenge - sign up at your local library now!

  This year's National Summer Reading Challenge theme is Read to the Beat.

Join the FREE Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat at any Havering library during the Summer holidays.  It is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and powered by Universal Music UK.

 This year’s theme explores the link between music and storytelling.  Children aged 4–11 years can join in, it is fun, free and helps build up reading confidence and skills over the Summer holidays! 

Children complete six library books/reading goals.  They can read whatever they like – books, ebooks, audiobooks, picture books and more, can join in with free library activities and earn stickers, collector’s cards, a certificate and medal.

 Visit any Havering library with your child from 4th July to sign up for the challenge - most children start it when school finishes and the summer holidays begin.

Children will need their own Havering Library card - these are free, just bring in something current which has the parent/carer’s name and address. 

Now is the time to sign up and complete the challenge! Head down to your local library or sign up online by visiting their website.

Last week, the lunchtime Library Club children enjoyed lots of summer-themed activities.

Book of the Week

The Book of the Week last week was Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. Mr Fox is a very clever fox - every evening he creeps down into the valley and helps himself to food from the nearby farms. Chickens from Farmer Boggis, ducks and geese from Farmer Bunce, and turkeys from Farmer Bean. But now the farmers have had enough, and together they hatch a plan to get rid of Mr Fox for good! But what they don't know is Mr Fox has some help, and a fantastic escape plan of his own...

Urgent request - Returning borrowed library books

We have so many lovely books in our library but, unfortunately, many of them get borrowed by a child and then never returned to the library. Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.

Year 1 Spinebreakers have a Teddy Bears Reading Picnic!

 

Yesterday morning, our Year 1 Spinebreakers had a wonderful time taking part in a Teddy Bears Reading Picnic!

First, they all had the exciting task of choosing which cuddly toy they would be taking to the picnic, and which bear-themed book they would like to read. 

Once they had chosen their picnic friends and books, Miss Flower started the fun by reading everyone the funny Teddy Bears Picnic story.

Then, everyone quietly read their book aloud to their cuddly toy.

Next, everyone chose some colouring sheets and produced some wonderful artwork.

Miss Flower then read another book to the group while everyone enjoyed a yummy sweet treat and drink to end the perfect Teddy Bears Reading Picnic!

Back in the library, the Spinebreakers were all awarded special certificates for taking part - everyone said they had the best time!

The Story Scrapbook completes its journey around the school!

    

The Story Scrapbook completes its journey around the school!

Every week, a different class around the school is delivered the scrapbook by two of our Spinebreakers. The class's task is to fill a double-page spread with work based on a book of their choice - this could be their end-of-day story or a class favourite. Classes can fill their pages with drawings, paintings, writing, collages - they just need to be creative and use their imaginations!

Last week, the Story Scrapbook was delivered to Nursery. They chose Goldilocks and the Three Bears as their story and produced two wonderfully creative pages.

That now completes the Story Scrapbook's journey around the classes for this school year. We have had some wonderfully creative pages produced - here are some examples:

We look forward to seeing what imaginative displays will be created when we return in September!

Reading Assemblies - The Robot and the Bluebird and This Moose Belongs to Me

  

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Mrs Stanley read The Robot and the Bluebird. This is the story of a Robot with a broken heart – a Robot who thinks he is good for nothing. Then one winter’s day, a Bluebird appears and gives the Robot the strength to make a final journey.

For the KS2 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Brimmer read This Moose Belongs To Me. Wilfred owned a moose. He hadn’t always owned a moose. The moose came to him a while ago and he knew, just KNEW, that it was meant to be his!

This week, our Story Suitcases were taken home by Nellie, Rayan, Roza and Jacob. We hope you all enjoy a snuggly evening with a great book and a yummy hot chocolate.

Last week, the lunchtime Library Club children enjoyed lots of creative colouring to celebrate insect week!

Book of the Week

The Book of the Week last week was Supertato: Despicable Bean! by Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet. ​It is night-time in the supermarket and the veggies are ROASTING! There's only one thing for it - it is time for a HOLIDAY! But it looks like there's more to friendly holiday planner Pam than meets the eye and soon Supertato and the team find themselves in desperate DANGER! Will they ever make their getaway?! THE HEAT IS ON!

Chatterbooks sessions

Last week, the library Chatterbooks groups continued with their final sessions of The Runaway Pea. Everyone got creative, making their very own runaway peas!
