Reading Assemblies - From Heroic Supertato To The Demon Headmaster!

Take a look at the books we have been sharing during our Reading Assemblies:

Creator of The Night Gardener, The Fan Brothers, tell the story of a young boy who sets sail to find a place his grandfather told him about - the spot where the Ocean Meets the Sky. This book can be found on the Year 2 Reading Tracker.

Supertato - we're all familiar with this unlikely hero! In his first book, Supertato comes face-to-face with the mischievous, Evil Pea. But, will Supertato save the veggies from Evil Pea's deadly rampage? This book can be found on the Reception Reading Tracker.

Dinah joins a new school, but quickly realises not is all it seems. The children are too well-behaved, almost robotic. Along with her foster brothers, Dinah sets out to discover why her headmaster has such a strong hold over her peers. The Demon Headmaster can be found on the Year 5 Reading Tracker.

Daydreamer, Clementine discovers a mysterious house standing in the middle of town that was never there before. Venturing inside, she finds the house full of swirling snow globes, each containing a trapped magician. This book can be found on the Year 6 Reading Tracker.

Especially For Girls!

Our year 6 Book Bloggers wanted an area within the library that showcased books aimed at a female audience. We have spent the last couple of weeks sourcing props to advertise and display the books the girls wished to promote. Miss Jarvis managed to find us a dolls house for free - the perfect size to use as a book shelf!

They have filled the shelves with a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Including books from the series, Little People, Big Dreams, all of which focus on women who have changed the world.

Using the car, which they were also gifted, they have made an area for new and exciting titles.

Together, they created a Book Review sheet to encourage others to review the stories they read, as well as read them. Please help yourself to one next time you visit.

Our Final Library Visit

The Year 2 Spinebreakers were joined by Cedar and Cherry Spinebreakers for an afternoon of sharing stories in our local library. This was our sixth and final visit to the library this year. The children picked out their favourite stories and searched for Wally and friends within the busy crowds of Wally World!

Don't forget, the library is a great place to visit during the summer break. You can participate in their national reading challenge and get a head-start of next year's 105 Books tracker by borrowing books from your list!

This year's Summer Reading Challenge's theme is...

The challenge kicks off this Saturday! Head down to your local library and sign up today!

Something Scary Hides Within...

 FOR YEAR 6 EYES ONLY!

In the library you'll now find a cobweb-covered case full of spooky stories. These books are reserved for our year 6 pupils only. Please see Mrs McFarlane, if you'd like to look inside - beware, these titles are not for the faint-hearted!

Reading Assemblies

Welcome back! Our reading assemblies started up again this week for the final weeks of this academic year.

Miss Hamilton lead this week's Key Stage 2 assembly with 'How to be Extra-Ordinary' by Rashmi Sirdeshpande. This book contains fifteen true stories of incredible humans, such as, David Attenborough, Mo Farah, Stephen Hawking and Michelle Obama. This book can be found on the Year 4 Reading Tracker.

Before we broke up for the half-term, we gave out certificates to the following children:

Inaya, Nico, Adon, Alayna, Farzaan, Serghei, Tillie-Rose, Layla and Adelina for reading five books.

Lukas and Tesha for reading ten books.

And Levi, Leonard, Jack, Rylie-Mae, Ashlean, Brodie, Manreet. Isabella, Issam, Alexandra and Sophia for reading all fifteen books that feature on the 105 Books trackers.

Year 1 Spinebreakers Visit Waterstones!

This morning, our wonderful year 1 Spinebreakers visited Waterstones in Romford to buy new books for our school library.

On arrival, they searched the children's reading area for a selection of new titles. Take a look at the books they chose...

Having read 'Let the Pidgeon Drive the Bus', Zofia was keen to read 'The Pidgeon Will Ride the Roller Coaster!' Drawn in by the bright and sparkly cover, Zofia's next pick was 'Ten Little Unicorns'.

Knowing we were going for cake straight after, Chiraj had to pick the story called 'Cake!' His second book of choice was Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeloa's story about making a difference, 'Speak Up!'

Like Zofia, Alfie grabbed one of Mike Brownlow's stories, 'Ten Little Penguins'. His second book was the follow on from Handa's Surprise, 'Handa's Noisy Night'.

Bernice picked up one of the latest releases, 'Amy Gets Eaten' and a copy of 'Mammoth, Big Beast, Big City, BIG TROUBLE!

Munsha picked up 'Do You Love Exploring?' - a book jam-packed with facts about animals across the world. Her second book was, 'Dogs Don't Do Ballet'.

Olaf went straight for two new releases, 'Sammy Striker and the Football Cup' and 'Flora and Nora, Hunt for Treasure'.

Searching the store for new titles was clearly a tricky and tiring task, so the Spinebreakers were treated to marshmallow topped hot chocolates and cakes in the W Café!

New Books!

Before we broke up for the half term break, Mrs Jennings and I visited 66 Books in Hemel Hempstead for the first time. If you haven't been before, you must! It is full from floor to ceiling of books for all ages, and the best thing... everything is hugely discounted! Our reason for the visit was to replenish our library stock with some new titles to engage our readers across the school. We were lost within the aisles of the warehouse for many hours choosing the best titles for our pupils. Take a look at just some of the books we purchased...

Year 2 Spinebreakers Visit Waterstones!

Before the half term, our Year 2 Spinebreakers visited Waterstones in Romford to purchase a selection of books which would be suitable for their peers. During our visit, we were very kindly greeted by store manager, Sultana, who gifted us a bag of goodies!

Take a look at their choices...

Drawn in by their vibrant front covers, Lucas's top picks were Christine McGuiness's 'Amazing Me, Amazing You' and the fabulous 'Llama Glamarama!

Qhaleed loves the Supertato series, so when he saw 'Mean Green Time Machine', he just knew children across the school would love it too! His second choice was Kim Hillyard's story 'Mabel and the Mountain', a story about believing in yourself.

With Fathers' Day just around the corner, Anya wanted a story that celebrates dads, that's why her first pick was 'Amazing Dad' by Alison Brown. 'Harriet', the story of the strongest girl in the world was her second choice.

Maya-Aisha chose two stories to make her laugh - 'The Princess with the Flaming Bottom' and 'Baby's First Jailbreak'. Mulberry Class have already borrowed the first of the two and thought it was hilarious!

Like Anya, Tyler wanted a story to read in the lead up to Fathers' Day, so he chose 'Daddy Do My Hair, Beth's Twists'. His second pick was 'The Girl and The Dinosaur'.

Nyasa chose two woodland-set stories - 'Little Lost Fox' and 'Peter Rabbit, Hide and Seek'. I can't wait to read these myself!

These are the extra books we were gifted!

Of course, no visit to Waterstones would be complete with a trip to the W Cafe for cakes and hot chocolate!
