This Week's Reading Assemblies

 

This week, our reading assemblies were lead by Mrs Green (KS2 assembly) and Mrs Nicholls (KS1 assembly). Each assembly started off with an introduction to a new book featured on the list of 105 Books to Read Before you Leave Broadford.

Mrs Green shared the introduction to Ted Hughes's 'The Iron Man', which can be found on the Year 5 Reading Tracker. Ted Hughes's gigantic metal robot appears out of nowhere, after being discovered by a young boy, Hogarth, he begins devouring farm machinery, until the farmers rise up against him.

Mrs Nicholls read Julia Donaldson's 'The Snail and The Whale'. This book can be found on the Year 1 Reading Tracker. A tiny snail with BIG enthusiasm and courage travels the world on the back of a humpback whale! Become an illustrator like Axel Scheffler (the artist behind the story) and learn how to draw the snail! We have purchased extra copies of each title, all of which can be borrowed from the library now.

Storytime Magazine Reading Groups

This is our second year of subscribing to Storytime Magazine. Each issue is jam-packed with myths, fairy tales, short stories and legends from around the world.

Library Groups

Six children from each year group (1-6) have been chosen to take part in a new reading incentive. Each week they will visit the library to share stories from the magazine with children from another year group - year 6 will be reading with year 3; year 5 will be reading with year 2; and year 4 will be reading with year 1. A new issue of the magazine is released each month. Once the new issues are in, we will send home the previous issue with the pupils who have been reading them.

So far the children have been excited to visit the library and read their magazines - even Theo, our reading dog, couldn't resist taking a sneak peak!

We have subscribed to extra copies to be kept in the library for children across the school to borrow. Why not take a look next time you visit!

The Last Day Of The Book Fair!

Today is the last chance to join us at the Book Fair. We will be based under the canopy from 3pm.

Lucky Book Fair Winners!

To celebrate the return of the Book Fair, we gave five children from across the school £5 to spend at the fair. We wanted everyone to have the opportunity to win a voucher, so we put the names of all our pupils in a hat and picked out five lucky winners.

Congratulations to Khushbakht, Lochlan, Emmalee, Demi and Aisling! If you haven't yet visited the fair to spend your voucher, join us after school!

Reading Assembly - Michael Morpurgo's War Horse

 

This week, our KS2 reading assembly was lead by Miss Wyatt.

Miss Wyatt shared the opening chapter of Michael Morpurgo's 'War Horse', which can be found on the Year 4 Reading Tracker, part of the '105 Books to Read Before you Leave Broadford'. This story is told through the eyes of Joey, a horse battling his way through The First World War. Since its release, this story has been adapted for the big screen and the stage.

KS1 Reading assemblies will now take place on during Monday afternoons.

Each week, once the books have been shared, we will add new copies to our library bookshelves for children across the school to borrow.

Autumn Term Book Fair!

 The Book Fair is coming to Broadford!

Our Autumn Term Book Fair will be based in the new hall from 3.10pm on the following dates;

Thursday 22nd September 22

Friday 23rd September 22

Monday 26th September 22

Tuesday 27th September 22

As you know, we are a cashless school, therefore we don't have an awful lot of money we can use as change. We kindly ask that you pay with coins instead of notes, where possible.

The Spinebreakers Visit Harold Hill Library

 This afternoon, our Year 1, Almond and Oak Spinebreakers walked down to Harold Hill Library. They enjoyed looking through the fantastic selection of books the library has to offer. After reading with the Year 1 Spinebreakers, our wonderful Year 6 helped them to choose some books to borrow and bring back to school.

 

 

 

On returning to school, we shared some of the hilarious titles we have borrowed. We read Bernice's pick, 'Dave's Breakfast Blast Off!' - the tale of Dave, who searches high and low for a delicious breakfast. But, we are not so keen on the idea of eating flies!

The Scrapbook Has Been Delivered To...

Apricot Spinebreakers had the important job of delivering the reading scrapbook to it's first destination today - to Almond Class!

Zofia and Alfie visited the library at the end of last week to write a special note for Almond class. They were the first Spinebreakers to take a look inside our special writing box, which is full of colourful stickers, fun pencils and pretty note cards. They chose their pencil of choice and got writing straight away!

 

Today, they were very excited to climb the stairs that lead to the Year 6 classrooms and make this special delivery. 

Beech Spinebreakers will return to Almond next week and collect the scrapbook. We cannot wait to hear about the story they have been reading as part of their end of day read!
