Welcome to the Broadford Library Weekly Newsletter! 

Each week, we will be bringing you a look back on the previous week in the library, including the fun that our lunchtime library clubs have had, new books, children's book reviews, library displays and much more!

Lunchtime library clubs

Last week, our two Library lunchtime clubs enjoyed their last session with a delicious treat. They had lots of fun completing a Summer Activity Booklet and enjoyed colouring their own personalised bookmark. Thank you for coming to our Lunchtime Library Club, we look forward to continuing with the clubs in September. Farewell to our Year 6 children who attended our Library Clubs. You will be missed!

Library displays

It is that exciting time of the year again where we get ready for all the fun Summer Reading activities. Every child will shortly receive a Summer Reading Tracker that they can complete and return to school by Friday September 6th 2024. 

Everyone will also receive a bookmark from our local library. This year's National Summer Reading Challenge theme is Marvellous Makers! Head down to your local library or sign up online by visiting their website. 

New in the library

This year, we have set up an exciting new challenge for all Year Groups. Each class will be competing with their year group to see who can return the most library books back to the library before: Wednesday 17th July 2024. 

Can you help your child's class to win! 

Borrowed library books brought back from home = 1 point 

Any books with our 'Library Return' tags on them = 2 points 

Any books from our 105 books to read = 3 points

Book reviews

Our lovely Year 1 Chatterbooks group have been coming to the Library every Wednesday to listen to different Julia Donaldson stories and complete activities. This term they have been working on Zog. They enjoyed completing a book review in their last session and gave the book 5 stars. 

Visitors to the library

Last week, some of our Year 4 children enjoyed individual visits to the library for extra reading time.

 

Spinebreakers

Last week, Prisha, Ronnie and Matei from Nursery returned the Story Scrapbook to the library. The nursery children produced some lovely artwork on their chosen theme of Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz for their display. 

Nursery were the final recipients of the scrapbook for this school year. Well done to everyone for such wonderful displays and creativity for your chosen books!

 

105 Books reading achievements

Well done to Olivia who has read five books and earned her Bronze Certificate.

 Well done to Alayah, Emmy and Darcie who have read 10 books and earned their Silver Certificates.

Well done to Maggie, Ava, Aiza and Anya who have read all 15 books, earning their Gold Certificates and completing their trackers.

Well done to all!

Urgent request - Returning borrowed library books

We have had lots of lovely new books added to the library collection over the past couple of months but, unfortunately, many of them have been borrowed by children and never returned to the library. Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.

National Summer Reading Challenge - Sign up now!

National Summer Reading Challenge!

  This year's National Summer Reading Challenge theme is Marvellous Makers! 

Now is the time to sign up and complete the challenge! Head down to your local library or sign up online by visiting their website.

TAKE PART TO WIN!!

Last year, 26 pupils from Broadford completed the Summer challenge - an average of just 1 child per class. This year, we aim to increase that number! 

If you complete the challenge, let us know via our Facebook or Instagram accounts. 

Children who complete the challenge will be entered into a draw and will have the chance of winning a prize!

The Story Scrapbook completes its journey!

  

The Story Scrapbook has had a busy few weeks! 

First, it was delivered to Birch class in Year 6 for the week. The class chose The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow as their theme and produced a lovely display! Nevaeh and Adu, Birch class Spinebreakers, then returned the Story Scrapbook to the library before delivering it to Rowan class in Year 2 for their turn. 

Then, Iustin and Zyana, Rowan class Spinebreakers, returned the Story Scrapbook to the library after Rowan class in Year 2 had created some wonderful artwork on their chosen theme of Chocolate Planet by Beverly Brumfield for their display. Iustin and Zyana then delivered the Story Scrapbook to Nursery for their turn. 

Lastly, Prisha, Ronnie and Matei from Nursery returned the Story Scrapbook to the library. Nursery had produced a very creative display on their chosen theme of Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz.

That completes the Story Scrapbook's journey around the classes for this school year. We look forward to seeing what imaginative displays will be created when we return in September!

Reading Assemblies - This week, a man loves his job on the Moon, and a girl has magical powers!

  

In KS1 this week, Mrs Stanley read Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob). This book tells the story of Bob who has very special job...looking after the Moon!

This book features on the Year 1 105 book list, which you can see here. 

In KS2, Miss Jennings read The Magic Finger. This book tells the story of a little girl who discovers she has very unique magical powers.

Lunchtime library clubs

Last week, our two Library lunchtime clubs had great fun celebrating International Joke Day! They took part in some joke/punchline matching activities, made mini joke books and shared lots of funny jokes! 

Library displays

We celebrated cartoon and comic books in the library last week, with a lovely display of relevant resources.

New in the library

As well as our wonderful collection of fiction books, we also have many informative and interesting non-fiction books, which children are also able to borrow. Last week, we were lucky to receive a donation of books that included some lovely new titles to add to our non-fiction section. 

Book reviews

Paige in Year 4 wrote a wonderful book review of Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. She gave it 5 stars and recommended it for people who like space.

Visitors to the library

Reading Assembly - This week, a boy owns a moose!

 

In KS2 this week, Miss Jewell read "This Moose Belongs to Me". This book tells the story of Wilfred who owns a moose called Marcel...or does he?!

Lunchtime library clubs

Last week, our two Library lunchtime clubs had great fun celebrating Insect Week! They did a minibeasts hunt around the library, produced some lovely artwork, solved word searches and listened to some insect-themed stories. 

Library displays

We celebrated Insect Week in the library last week, with a lovely display of relevant resources.

New in the library

Occasionally, books are returned to the library in a bit of a sorry state, with missing or torn pages or other damage. This is why we have introduced the Book Hospital! Please return any damaged books to the box and we will do our best to repair them for other children to enjoy again.

This book was returned completely missing its cover!

We repaired it by creating a whole new cover and it has since been enjoyed by children again.

Book reviews

Albie in Year 1 was very excited to borrow a library book to enjoy reading at home. He chose School Gremlins. The book made him feel happy. 

Visitors to the library

Last week, we had some of our youngest visitors from Nursery who came to the library to share stories with Theo, our visiting Reading Dog.

Spinebreakers

Last week, Nevaeh and Adu, Birch class Spinebreakers, returned the Story Scrapbook to the library after Birch class in Year 6 had created some wonderful artwork on their chosen theme of The Final Year for their display. Nevaeh and Adu then delivered the Story Scrapbook to Rowan class in Year 2 for their turn. We look forward to seeing what Rowan class will choose to do!
