Tips for Reading at Home - Week 1 - Make it Predictable!

To help you #GoAllIn for the National Year of Reading, we will be posting short, easily-to-follow tips to support you in reading at home with your child.

Week 1 - Make it Predictable!

Reading tip: Read at the same time each day.

Why it helps: Children feel safe and relaxed when routines stay the same.

Example:
“Every night after dinner, we sit on the sofa and read one book. Even on busy days, we keep it short rather than skipping it.”

Remember - every minute counts!

Reading Assemblies - The Tiger Who Came to Tea

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Mrs Stanley read Judith Kerr’s classic, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don't expect to see at the door is a big furry, stripy tiger!

This book features on the Year 1 105 book list, which you can see here

Please email Miss Flower, School Librarian, if you are looking for one of the '105 Books to Read', with your child's full name and class.

THIS WEEK - Parent's Pick Week

This year is the National Year of Reading and we are about to kick off with our first event!

We’re excited to introduce our Parent Picks Shelf, a small book display featuring stories recommended by parents and carers.

Each book will include a handwritten note from a parent, such as “I loved this when I was 7”, helping children see that reading is something families enjoy and share across generations.

THIS WEEK, parents are invited to send in a favourite childhood book through their child. The book will be displayed in class for everyone to enjoy.

Thank you for helping us build a love of reading together 📖✨

The Story Scrapbook continues its journey around the school!

The Story Scrapbook continues its journey around the school!

Each week, a different class around the school is delivered the scrapbook by two of our Spinebreakers. The class's task is to fill a double-page spread with work based on a book of their choice - this could be their end-of-day story or a class favourite. Classes can fill their pages with drawings, paintings, writing, collages - they just need to be creative and use their imaginations!

Last week, the Story Scrapbook had its next delivery, to Apricot class in Year 1. The class chose Melanie Walsh's 10 Things I Can Do To Help My World as their theme and produced some wonderful pages!

Dylan, one of Apricot class's Spinebreakers, then returned the Story Scrapbook to the library for some photos, before delivering it to Cherry class in Year 3 for their turn. We look forward to seeing what they will do!

Reading Assemblies - The Human Body and Voices in the Park

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Harman read some of the non-fiction book, The Human BodyThe unique design of this book allows children to discover a ‘hidden’ image by holding the page up to a bright light or shining a torch behind the page.

For the KS2 Reading Assembly this week, Miss McClenaghan shared extracts from Voices in the Park. Four different voices tell their own versions of the same walk in the park.
