Spring Reading Challenge 2026!

 

The Spring Reading Challenge 2026 is here!

  Our Library challenges are always bursting with fun ways of keeping children engaged and enthusiastic about reading during the school holidays.

The Spring Reading Challenge is now available to collect from the Library for children in Yr3/Yr4/Yr5/Yr6.

For children in Nursery/Rec/Yr1/Yr2, please ask your child's class teacher for a copy.

Once we return to school after the Easter break, children should hand their completed tracker to Miss Flower in the Library

by Friday 17th April 2026 to receive a special Certificate and the chance to win a prize!

Lunchtime library club 

Last week, our lunchtime Library Club children welcomed in Spring with some wonderful colouring sheets.

Book of the Week

The Book of the Week last week was Four Children and IT by Jacqueline Wilson. Rosalind is the eldest sister (though sometimes she wishes she wasn't). Robbie is her younger brother. Smash is their stepsister and she isn't too happy about it. Maudie is the baby of the family - everybody loves Maudie. Now you've met the four children, but what is IT?

Chatterbooks sessions

Last week, the library Chatterbooks groups continued with their final session of You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus! Everyone enjoyed getting creative and using their imaginations to design their own animals on different modes of transport!

Library displays

As well as many popular books from recent times, we also have a vast range of 'classics' available for children to borrow. Old favourites and timeless treasures include stories like The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Treasure Island and Peter Pan. 

Alternatively, if children would just like to borrow a short story to read at breaktime or lunch, there are also lots of 'Quick Reads' available to borrow too.

Urgent request - Returning borrowed library books

We have so many lovely books in our library but, unfortunately, many of them get borrowed by a child and then never returned to the library. Please can you check at home to see if you have any Broadford library books (stamped inside/Broadford logo attached). If you do, please pass them to your child to return to the library asap, where our Book Monster is waiting to eat them! Thank you.

The Story Scrapbook has been on the move!

  

The Story Scrapbook has been on the move!

Each week, a different class around the school is delivered the scrapbook by two of our Spinebreakers. The class's task is to fill a double-page spread with work based on a book of their choice - this could be their end-of-day story or a class favourite. Classes can fill their pages with drawings, paintings, writing, collages - they just need to be creative and use their imaginations!

Last week, the Story Scrapbook had its next delivery, to Redwood class in Year 5. The class chose Enid Blyton's classic The Magic Faraway Tree as their theme and produced some lovely pages!

Denis and Robyn, Redwood class's Spinebreakers, then returned the Story Scrapbook to the library for some photos, before delivering it to Maple class in Year 4 for their turn. We look forward to seeing what they will do!

Reading Assemblies - The Day the Crayons Quit and The Boy Who Grew Dragons

 

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Myers read the Oliver Jeffers’s classic, The Day the Crayons Quit. Poor Duncan just wants to colour. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only written letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit!

For the KS2 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Bell read an extract from The Boy Who Grew Dragons. When Tomas discovers a strange old tree at the bottom of his grandad's garden, he doesn't think much of it. But he takes the funny fruit from the tree back into the house – and gets the shock and delight of his life when a tiny dragon hatches!

Story Suitcases

This week, our Story Suitcases were taken home by Isabela, Prisha, Zyana and George. We hope you all enjoy a snuggly evening with a great book and a yummy hot chocolate.  

If your child has received a Story Suitcase this week, please return it back to the school library on Thursday morning. Thank you.

Lunchtime library club 

Last week, our lunchtime Library Club children got prepared for Mother's Day with some lovely colouring sheets and bookmarks.

Book of the Week

The Book of the Week last week was This Rock is Mine! by Kaye Umansky & Alice McKinley. Two frogs sit on an ordinary little rock. But...uh-oh! Both frogs think it's their rock - and they really don't want to share! The frogs fight and squabble furiously. But when a hungry heron swoops down, both frogs realise it's time to find another rock...together!

Chatterbooks sessions

Last week, new library Chatterbooks groups enjoyed their first session of You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus! Everyone laughed along to the funny story and all groups got 10/10 for their questions. Well done, everyone!

Spinebreakers

Last Thursday, the Year 3 Spinebreakers enjoyed a fun trip to Harold Hill Library. You can read more about it here

New books

A recent reading-themed survey of children in our school highlighted that they would like to see more Lottie Brooks books and to broaden the library's selection of Manga/Anime-style books. Miss Flower has now been able to add more books to cover both of these requests, much to the delight of the children!

Tips For Reading At Home - Week 5 - Use a Silly Voice

 

 

To help you #GoAllIn for the National Year of Reading, we will be posting short, easily-to-follow tips to support you in reading at home with your child.

Week 5 - Use a Silly Voice

Reading tip: Change your voice for characters.

Why it helps: It keeps children engaged and makes stories memorable.

Example:
“A deep voice for the giant or a squeaky voice for a mouse can turn a short book into a mini performance 🎭”

Year 3 Spinebreakers visit Harold Hill Library!

 

This morning, our Year 3 Spinebreakers enjoyed a lovely trip to Harold Hill Library.

First, they browsed the shelves before each choosing a book to read.

 Once they had read their books, they each completed a book review.

After completing some wonderful book reviews, the Spinebreakers then listened to some stories and took part in some shared reads.

 Lastly, everyone took a turn of using the library machine.

Those children who do not already have one were given an application form for a Library Card.

Everyone had a lovely time and it was great to tick some more tasks off of their Spinebreaker trackers for this year!

Reading Assemblies - Ocean Meets Sky and Phenomenal Plants

 

For the KS1 Reading Assembly this week, Miss Wyatt shared Ocean Meets Sky. Every time Finn looks out his window, it is a constant reminder of the stories his grandfather told him about the place where the ocean meets the sky. Finn's grandfather is gone now but Finn knows the perfect way to honour him – he'll build his own ship and sail out to find this magical place himself!

For the KS2 Reading Assembly this week, Mrs Bamgboye read some extracts from the non-fiction book, Phenomenal Plants. Find out why plants are phenomenal and learn about those that live in some extreme habitats or have otherwise extreme surroundings.
