Year 5 Spinebreakers Visit Waterstones

Last week our Year 5 Spinebreakers visited Waterstones in Romford to purchase some new books for our school library. During their visit they were met by the Year 2 Spinebreakers from Mead and enjoyed hot chocolates and festive cakes in Costa.

Here are our Spinebreakers back at school and showing off the books they chose...

Courtney added to our collection of 'Little People, Big Dreams', with the story of Rosa Parks' life. She also picked a Jacqueline Wilson book to get us in the mood for Christmas.

Weronika's two choices were Enid Blyton's, The Wishing Chair Collection, and Winter Magic.

Ranita is a regular visitor to the library and enjoys a story to really get her teeth into! She chose David Baddiel's The Person Controller and a story to make you laugh - Simply the Quest.

Sasha added to our collection of Barry Loser books with the latest story, 'The Case of The Crumpled Carton'. Along with that, he picked 'The Trials of Apollo', which he was very excited about reading!

Ellis purchased a shorter tale by Guy Bass, 'Stitch Head', and a Ciaran Murtagh funny book 'Prom King, The Fincredible Diary'.

Gavin is a fan of Rick Riordan's books, so he chose two; Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer and The Kane Chronicles, The Throne of Fire.

Harry Potter Course - Ravenclaw Round

With a total of 555 points, Mr White and his team; Ameerah Bashir, Ella Lockhart, Florence Ayres, Summer Wingrove, Laicey McGeoghan and Dorrie Lewis, are the winners of the Autumn Term Premier Reading League! The last few days of the competition were very tense, with the top three teams fighting their way to the top of the league! As a reward for their reading efforts, they have been given the choice of places they would like to visit - last term's winners visited Kidspace, followed by lunch at Kaspars in Romford.

Join next term's Premier Reading League.
Start creating your new teams now, ready for the Spring Term competition in January. Like last time, your team will be made up of seven members - one to be an adult team mascot. However, unlike any league before, you will need five KS2 pupils in your team and one KS1 pupil. If you get stuck on who to choose from KS1, Mrs McFarlane, or your team mascot, will be on hand to help you. The league will run from Monday 8th January, until Friday 16th March 2017.

Don't forget to pick up a sign-up sheet from the library today!

Premier Reading League - We Are Over Half Way Through!

There are just four more weeks remaining until the end of this term's Premier Reading League. Pupils from across KS2 have been working extremely hard to earn as many points as possible for their teams.

Currently in lead with 179 points is Unicorn Club! Team members, Emily Claydon, Diya Patel, Nikola Urban, Libby Northwood, Oliwia Bartnik and Courtney Simpson have been reading at every opportunity to earn extra points. Their team mascot is Mrs Charlesworth, who has been encouraging them to read at home and log their points in the library.

In a close second is The Reading Champs with 175 points. The team is made up of year three pupils, James Olatunji, Nina Joshi, Amandeep Ubhi, Dora Lewis, Alice Adedipe and Elliot Cottam, they are led by team mascot, Mrs Chance.

It is important to bring your reading record along with you to the library when you change your books, from here your points can be collected for your group.

Not in lead? Not a problem!
Earning points could not be easier! One point is awarded for each book, or for every 100 pages read. Three points is rewarded for writing a book review (why not complete the ones in the front of your reading record?!) and six points will be given for completing a review using MyBookBlog - if you're not sure how, ask you teacher or visit the library.

Good luck to all those currently taking part!

Get Caught Reading Winners 2017

Congratulations to our winners of this Summer's Get Caught Reading competition! There was a total of 92 photos shared of our pupils and staff reading in locations stretching from Cuba, all the way to India! We've seen children reading while hanging upside down; enjoying stories while relaxing in exotic locations; and on a whole host of fantastic inflatables!

The map above shows all the places where children and teachers were caught reading.

As you can image, choosing a winner from each Key Stage, and a runner-up, was quite a challenge! However, after much deliberation we finally reached a decision...

Key Stage One Winner: Leah Sharpe was spotted reading while taking a break in a lorry.

Key Stage One Runner-Up: Ethan Carruth was discovered sound asleep after an exhausting read the night before.

Key Stage Two Winner: Connor Robinson was spotted reading a story to two Stormtroopers.

Key Stage Two Runner-Up: Caitlin Bowden was caught reading at Dover Castle and with her head in the stocks in Stratford-Upon-Avon!

Well done to everyone who took part. The Get Caught Reading competition will return next Summer.
